Michelangelo Buonarroti was an Italian artist and sculptor who lived from 1475 to 1564. He is considered one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance period. Michelangelo's early career was marked by his sculptural masterpieces, including the Pieta and David. He later became known for his work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, a project that spanned four years and featured iconic frescoes such as The Creation of Adam. Michelangelo also created the marble masterpiece of the last judgment on the chapel's altar wall. In addition to his sculptures and paintings, he was also an accomplished architect, designing buildings such as St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Michelangelo's work had a profound influence on the development of Western art and continues to be celebrated and admired to this day.
