Ukraine is a country located in Eastern Europe, known for its rich cultural heritage and turbulent history. It was once a significant center of the powerful Kyivan Rus civilization, which existed from the 9th to 13th centuries. Throughout history, Ukraine has been under the control of various empires, including the Mongol Empire, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Russian Empire. In the 20th century, Ukraine experienced periods of independence, most notably following the Russian Revolution in 1917. However, it was later absorbed into the Soviet Union in 1922. Ukraine gained independence once again in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since then, Ukraine has faced political instability, including the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution and ongoing conflict with Russia over the annexation of Crimea and the war in Eastern Ukraine. Ukraine is currently striving to strengthen its democracy and economy while facing challenges from corruption and geopolitical tensions.
