Ancient Babylonia was one of the most influential civilizations in Mesopotamian history, located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in present-day Iraq. Emerging around 1894 BCE, it became a center of power, culture, and innovation under the rule of King Hammurabi, who is best known for the Code of Hammurabi—one of the earliest written legal systems in human history. Babylon later rose to prominence again under King Nebuchadnezzar II (605–562 BCE), who expanded the empire and built the legendary Hanging Gardens, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Babylonia’s achievements in astronomy, mathematics, literature, and architecture profoundly shaped later civilizations. Its capital, Babylon, stood as a symbol of wealth, wisdom, and divine kingship—guarded by the ziggurat Etemenanki, believed to have inspired the biblical Tower of Babel.
