Chile is known for its diverse geography including the Andes mountains, deserts, and Pacific coastline. The indigenous Mapuche people lived in the region for centuries before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. Chile gained independence from Spain in 1818 after a prolonged war led by figures like Bernardo O'Higgins. In the 20th century, Chile experienced political unrest, including the presidency of Salvador Allende and the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. The country transitioned to democracy in 1990 with Patricio Aylwin as president. Chile has since become one of the most stable and prosperous countries in South America, known for its strong economy, political stability, and advancements in areas like education and social welfare.
