Antonov, a Ukrainian aircraft manufacturing and design company, was founded on 31/05/1946 in the Soviet Union and became internationally recognized for developing large cargo and transport aircraft used in civil and military aviation. The company originated as an aircraft design bureau led by Oleg Antonov, an engineer specializing in transport aircraft. Its early work focused on developing utility and cargo planes capable of operating in challenging conditions, including short and unpaved runways.
During the Soviet era, Antonov designed several aircraft models that later became widely used in cargo transport and military logistics. One of its earliest successful aircraft was the An-2, introduced in 1947, a single-engine biplane that was produced in large numbers and used for agricultural work, passenger transport, and cargo operations. In later decades the bureau produced increasingly larger aircraft, including the An-22 “Antei” heavy transport aircraft in 1965 and the An-124 “Ruslan”, which first flew in 1982 and became one of the world’s largest cargo aircraft used by commercial and military operators.
