The Antonov An-26 was introduced as a twin-engine turboprop military transport aircraft developed by the Antonov Design Bureau to support cargo and troop transport operations. The aircraft completed its first flight on 21/05/1969 in Kyiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union. It was developed as a military transport variant of the Antonov An-24 regional airliner and was designed to transport cargo, vehicles, and personnel while operating from short or unprepared airfields. The aircraft features a high-wing configuration, allowing better ground clearance and improved performance during operations from rough airstrips. It is powered by two Ivchenko AI-24VT turboprop engines, each producing about 2,820 horsepower, along with a small RU-19A-300 turbojet auxiliary engine mounted in the right engine nacelle to provide additional thrust during takeoff and climb. The An-26 has a cargo compartment equipped with a rear loading ramp, which allows rapid loading and unloading of freight and military equipment. The aircraft can carry approximately 5.5 tons of cargo or up to 40 troops, depending on the configuration. Following testing and evaluation, the aircraft entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1973. Serial production took place at the Kyiv Aviation Plant in Ukraine. Between 1969 and 1986, approximately 1,400 aircraft were built, including several specialized variants such as the An-26B cargo version, the An-26RT communications relay aircraft, and the An-26Sh navigator training aircraft. The Antonov An-26 was exported to numerous countries and became widely used for military logistics, troop transport, and humanitarian cargo operations. Its ability to operate from short and unprepared runways made it suitable for operations in remote regions. Many aircraft remained in service with air forces and cargo operators for several decades after its introduction. #AviationHistory #Antonov #An26 #MilitaryTransport #TurbopropAircraft
