The Antonov An-124 “Ruslan” was introduced as a heavy strategic airlift aircraft developed by the Antonov Design Bureau to transport oversized and heavy cargo over long distances. The aircraft completed its first flight on 24/12/1982 at Svyatoshyn Airfield in Kyiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union. It was designed during the late Cold War period to provide the Soviet Union with a large cargo aircraft capable of transporting military equipment, vehicles, and other heavy loads. The An-124 features a high-wing configuration with a large cargo hold accessible through both a front nose cargo door and a rear loading ramp, allowing efficient loading and unloading of heavy equipment. The aircraft is powered by four Lotarev D-18T turbofan engines, each producing approximately 229 kN of thrust. It has a wingspan of about 73.3 meters, a maximum takeoff weight of around 405,000 kilograms, and a cargo capacity of up to 150 tons, depending on the mission profile. The cargo compartment is designed to carry large items such as armored vehicles, helicopters, and industrial equipment. After several years of testing and development, the aircraft entered service in January 1987 with the Soviet Air Force. Serial production took place at the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovsk, Russia, and the Kyiv Aviation Plant in Ukraine. A total of around 55 aircraft were built. The An-124 became one of the largest operational cargo aircraft in the world and has been used for both military and civilian heavy-lift transport operations. The aircraft has been widely used for transporting large cargo including aerospace components, industrial machinery, and humanitarian aid. Civilian operators such as Antonov Airlines have used the An-124 for international heavy cargo transport missions requiring the movement of oversized freight. #AviationHistory #Antonov #An124 #Ruslan #HeavyAirlift
