The Antonov An-148 was introduced as a regional jet airliner developed by the Antonov Design Bureau to serve short and medium-distance passenger routes. The aircraft completed its first flight on 17/12/2004 at Svyatoshyn Airfield in Kyiv, Ukraine. The project was designed to replace older regional aircraft operating in Eastern Europe and neighboring regions, while offering improved efficiency, modern avionics, and the ability to operate from airports with limited infrastructure.
The An-148 features a high-wing configuration, a design choice intended to allow the aircraft to operate from unprepared or snow-covered runways by keeping the engines mounted above the ground. The aircraft is powered by two Progress D-436-148 turbofan engines, each producing approximately 67 kN of thrust. The aircraft typically accommodates 70 to 85 passengers, depending on the cabin configuration. It has a cruising speed of around 800–870 km/h and a range of approximately 2,100 to 4,400 kilometers, depending on the variant and payload.
The aircraft incorporates modern flight systems including digital avionics and glass cockpit displays designed to improve operational efficiency and flight management. Its design also includes reinforced landing gear and systems intended to allow operations at regional airports with limited infrastructure. The An-148 was developed in cooperation with aviation manufacturers in both Ukraine and Russia, with production carried out at the Antonov Serial Production Plant in Kyiv and the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association in Russia.
After completing certification and flight testing, the Antonov An-148 entered commercial service in June 2009 with Rossiya Airlines. Several variants were produced, including the An-148-100 series, which offered different range capabilities. The aircraft was used by regional airlines and government operators for passenger transport across various domestic and regional routes.
The Antonov An-148 represented one of the modern regional jet aircraft developed in the post-Soviet aviation industry and was designed to operate efficiently in regions where airport infrastructure could be limited.
