The Antonov An-140 was introduced as a regional turboprop passenger aircraft developed by the Antonov Design Bureau to serve short and medium-distance routes. The aircraft completed its first flight on 17/09/1997 at Kharkiv International Airport in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The project was developed during the 1990s as part of efforts to create a modern regional aircraft that could replace aging Soviet-era turboprops such as the An-24 on domestic and regional airline routes.
The An-140 features a high-wing configuration designed to improve performance when operating from unpaved or poorly equipped airfields. It is powered by two Klimov TV3-117VMA-SBM1 turboprop engines, each producing approximately 2,500 horsepower, driving six-bladed propellers. The aircraft typically accommodates around 50 passengers, depending on the cabin configuration. It has a cruising speed of approximately 460–540 km/h and a range of about 2,100 kilometers with a full passenger load.
Development of the aircraft included modern avionics and improved fuel efficiency compared with earlier Soviet regional aircraft. The design also incorporated reinforced landing gear and systems that allowed operations from shorter runways and airports with limited infrastructure. These features made the aircraft suitable for regional air transport in areas with challenging operating environments.
After several years of testing and certification, the aircraft entered commercial service in 2002. Production of the An-140 was carried out at several facilities, including the Kharkiv State Aircraft Manufacturing Company in Ukraine, HESA in Iran, and Aviakor Aviation Plant in Samara, Russia under licensing agreements. The aircraft was used by several regional airlines and government operators for passenger transport and cargo operations.
The Antonov An-140 represented one of the post-Soviet regional aircraft programs developed to modernize short-haul aviation in Eastern Europe and neighboring regions.
