The Antonov An-30 was introduced as a specialized aerial survey and photographic aircraft developed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. The aircraft completed its first flight on 21/08/1974 in Kyiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union. The An-30 was designed as a modification of the Antonov An-24 regional turboprop airliner, adapted specifically for aerial mapping, cartographic surveys, and reconnaissance missions. The aircraft features a high-wing turboprop configuration and is powered by two Ivchenko AI-24VT turboprop engines, each producing approximately 2,820 horsepower. One of the key design changes from the An-24 was the addition of a glazed nose section that allowed a navigator to observe the ground directly during survey missions. The aircraft also included several camera ports installed in the fuselage floor for aerial photography equipment used in mapping and surveying operations. The An-30 could carry specialized cameras and instruments designed for large-scale geographic and cartographic surveys. The An-30 had a maximum cruising speed of around 440–500 km/h and a range of approximately 2,000 kilometers, depending on payload and mission requirements. The aircraft typically operated with a crew that included pilots, navigators, and photographic specialists responsible for operating the aerial survey equipment. Its stable flight characteristics and ability to maintain steady flight at relatively low speeds made it suitable for precise aerial imaging missions. Serial production of the Antonov An-30 began in the mid-1970s at the Kyiv Aviation Plant. The aircraft was used primarily by Soviet military and government organizations responsible for mapping and reconnaissance tasks. In addition to domestic use, the An-30 was exported to several countries for aerial survey operations. The Antonov An-30 was also used in international aerial observation programs, including flights conducted under the Open Skies Treaty, which allowed participating countries to conduct observation flights over each other's territories for transparency in military activities. #AviationHistory #Antonov #An30 #AerialSurvey #ColdWarAviation
