The Antonov An-2 was introduced as a multi-purpose utility aircraft designed by the Antonov Design Bureau for short takeoff and landing operations in rural and remote areas. The aircraft first flew on 31/08/1947 in Novosibirsk, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Soviet Union, with test pilot Pyotr Volodin at the controls. The An-2 was developed to replace earlier light utility aircraft and to support a wide range of roles including agricultural work, cargo transport, passenger flights, and medical evacuation.
The aircraft features a distinctive single-engine biplane configuration and was powered by a Shvetsov ASh-62IR radial piston engine producing about 1,000 horsepower. Its design allowed it to operate from short or unprepared airstrips, and it could carry up to 12 passengers or approximately 1,500 kilograms of cargo. The An-2’s rugged construction and low stall speed allowed it to fly safely at slow speeds and land in confined areas, which made it suitable for operations in remote regions of the Soviet Union.
Serial production of the aircraft began in 1948, and it was manufactured in several countries over the following decades, including the Soviet Union, Poland, and China. Large-scale production in Poland was carried out by PZL-Mielec, where thousands of aircraft were built for export and domestic use. In China, a licensed version known as the Y-5 was produced by Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation. Across all production lines, more than 18,000 aircraft were built, making the An-2 one of the most widely produced biplanes in aviation history.
The Antonov An-2 has been used in various roles such as agricultural spraying, cargo transport, passenger services, parachute training, and aerial survey missions. Its durable design has allowed many aircraft to remain operational decades after their introduction, and it continues to be used in several countries for specialized aviation tasks.
