The Antonov An-8 was introduced as the first twin-engine turboprop military transport aircraft developed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. The aircraft made its first flight on 11/02/1956 in Kyiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union. It was designed to provide the Soviet Air Force with a modern cargo aircraft capable of transporting troops, vehicles, and military equipment over medium distances while operating from relatively short or unprepared airfields. Development of the An-8 began in the early 1950s as part of a Soviet requirement for a new turboprop transport aircraft to replace older piston-engine cargo planes. The aircraft featured a high-wing configuration, a rear cargo loading ramp, and a large cargo compartment designed for efficient loading of vehicles and freight. It was powered by two Ivchenko AI-20D turboprop engines, each producing approximately 4,000 horsepower. The aircraft had a wingspan of about 37 meters, a maximum speed of around 500–520 km/h, and a range of roughly 4,400 kilometers depending on payload. The An-8 could carry about 11 tons of cargo or up to 48 troops, making it suitable for military logistics and airborne operations. Its rear loading ramp allowed vehicles and large equipment to be loaded directly into the cargo bay, a design feature that later became standard for many Soviet transport aircraft. The aircraft entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1958, following flight testing and development refinements. Serial production took place primarily at the Tashkent Aviation Production Association in Uzbekistan. Approximately 150 aircraft were built between 1957 and 1961. The operational experience gained from the An-8 program contributed to the development of later Antonov transport aircraft, including the An-12, which incorporated a similar configuration with increased capacity and four engines. The Antonov An-8 served primarily with the Soviet Air Force as a tactical transport aircraft before gradually being replaced by larger and more capable turboprop transports during the 1960s. #AviationHistory #Antonov #An8 #MilitaryTransport #ColdWarAviation
