The Antonov An-24 was introduced as a twin-engine turboprop regional airliner designed by the Antonov Design Bureau to operate on short and medium routes, including airports with limited infrastructure. The aircraft completed its first flight on 20/10/1959 in Kyiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union. It was developed under the direction of Oleg Antonov to replace older piston-engine passenger aircraft used on domestic routes across the Soviet Union.
The An-24 features a high-wing configuration designed to improve stability and allow operations from unpaved or rough airfields. The aircraft is powered by two Ivchenko AI-24 turboprop engines, each producing approximately 2,550 horsepower. The aircraft typically accommodates 44 to 52 passengers, depending on the configuration. Its maximum cruising speed is around 450–500 km/h, and it has a range of approximately 2,100 kilometers depending on payload and operational conditions. The design included robust landing gear and systems intended for operations in regions with limited airport infrastructure.
Following flight testing and design refinements, the aircraft entered service with Aeroflot in 1962. Serial production was carried out at several manufacturing plants, including the Kyiv Aviation Plant in Ukraine, Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant in Russia, and Xi’an Aircraft Industrial Corporation in China, where a licensed version known as the Xian Y-7 was produced. Over the course of production, more than 1,300 aircraft were built in multiple variants such as the An-24B passenger version and the An-26, a related military transport derivative.
The Antonov An-24 became widely used on regional passenger routes throughout the Soviet Union and other countries. Its ability to operate from short and unpaved runways allowed it to serve airports in remote regions. Many aircraft remained in service for several decades with airlines, cargo operators, and government organizations.
