The Antonov An-225 “Mriya” was introduced as a strategic heavy cargo aircraft developed by the Antonov Design Bureau to transport oversized loads and support the Soviet space program. The aircraft completed its first flight on 21/12/1988 at Svyatoshyn Airfield in Kyiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union. The aircraft was designed primarily to carry components of the Buran space shuttle and the Energia rocket system, transporting them between manufacturing facilities and launch sites. The An-225 features a six-engine turbofan configuration, powered by six Progress D-18T engines, each producing about 229 kN of thrust. It has a wingspan of approximately 88.4 meters, a length of about 84 meters, and a maximum takeoff weight of around 640,000 kilograms, making it the heaviest aircraft ever built. The cargo hold measures about 43 meters in length, allowing the aircraft to carry extremely large loads inside the fuselage. It can transport up to 250 tons of internal cargo or large external loads mounted on the aircraft’s upper fuselage. After its first flight in 1988, the aircraft conducted a public demonstration at the 1989 Paris Air Show, where it attracted international attention due to its size and cargo capacity. Only one aircraft was completed and entered operational service. After the cancellation of the Soviet space shuttle program in the early 1990s, the aircraft was later adapted for commercial heavy cargo operations and was operated by Antonov Airlines for international transport missions involving oversized freight. The Antonov An-225 established several aviation records for payload capacity and heavy cargo transport during its operational career. The aircraft remained in service for decades before being destroyed during fighting at Hostomel Airport in Ukraine on 27/02/2022 during the early stages of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. #AviationHistory #Antonov #An225 #Mriya #HeavyLiftAircraft
