The Antonov An-22 “Antei” was introduced as a heavy military transport aircraft designed to carry large and heavy cargo over long distances. Developed by the Antonov Design Bureau under the leadership of Oleg Antonov, the aircraft conducted its first flight on 27/02/1965 from Svyatoshyn Airfield in Kyiv, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union. The An-22 was designed to transport oversized military equipment, vehicles, and troops, and it became the first wide-body transport aircraft produced in the Soviet Union. The aircraft features a high-wing configuration with a large cargo hold and a rear loading ramp to enable direct loading of heavy equipment. It is powered by four Kuznetsov NK-12MA turboprop engines, each driving a pair of contra-rotating propellers. These engines are among the most powerful turboprop engines ever installed on an aircraft. The An-22 has a wingspan of about 64.4 meters, a maximum takeoff weight of around 250,000 kilograms, and can carry approximately 60 to 80 tons of cargo, depending on the mission profile. The cargo compartment was designed to transport items such as armored vehicles, artillery systems, and large engineering equipment. Following its first flight, the aircraft underwent several years of testing before entering service with the Soviet Air Force in 1967. Serial production was carried out at the Tashkent Aviation Production Association in Uzbekistan. A total of 68 aircraft were built between 1965 and 1975. The An-22 was used for strategic airlift missions, military logistics, and humanitarian transport operations, including the delivery of heavy equipment to remote locations. The Antonov An-22 also attracted international attention when it was displayed at the 1965 Paris Air Show, where it was presented publicly outside the Soviet Union for the first time. Its large size and turboprop propulsion made it one of the most recognizable transport aircraft of its era. Several aircraft remained in service for decades, supporting military logistics and cargo missions. #AviationHistory #Antonov #An22 #HeavyTransport #ColdWarAviation
