Anne Frank (1929–1945) is one of the most poignant and enduring voices to emerge from the Holocaust, remembered not only as a young girl caught in one of history’s darkest chapters, but as a gifted writer whose diary has touched millions across the world. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Anne and her Jewish family fled Nazi persecution and settled in Amsterdam, only to go into hiding in 1942 when the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands made their safety increasingly precarious. For more than two years, Anne, her family, and four others hid in a secret annex behind her father's business, relying on the bravery of non-Jewish friends to survive. During this time, Anne kept a diary, recording her thoughts, fears, dreams, and sharp observations of the world around her. Her writing reveals a mind far beyond her years—funny, intelligent, conflicted, and deeply hopeful, even amid looming danger. In August 1944, the annex was discovered, and the occupants were deported to concentration camps. Anne died of typhus in Bergen-Belsen in early 1945, just weeks before the camp was liberated.
