India won the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup on 08/03/2026 after defeating New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium. The victory secured India’s third title in the tournament’s history and completed the first successful title defense in the men’s T20 World Cup.
Batting first, the India national cricket team posted 255/5 in their allotted 20 overs, one of the highest totals recorded in a T20 World Cup final. Sanju Samson led the scoring with 89 runs from 46 balls, striking eight sixes and several boundaries. Ishan Kishan added a rapid 54 off 25 deliveries, while Abhishek Sharma scored 52 from only 21 balls to accelerate the innings during the middle overs. Samson’s performances throughout the tournament earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
In response, New Zealand struggled against India’s bowling attack and was dismissed for 159 in 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah delivered the standout performance with figures of 4 wickets for 15 runs, earning him the Player of the Match award. Axar Patel supported the attack by claiming three wickets, while Tim Seifert provided New Zealand’s main resistance with 52 runs.
The result marked several milestones for India in the history of the International Cricket Council tournament. The victory secured India’s third T20 World Cup title, following previous wins in 2007 and 2024, making them the first team to reach three championships in the competition. The team also became the first men’s side to win back-to-back T20 World Cups and the first host nation to win the tournament on home soil.
Following the victory, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced a reward of approximately 1.31 billion Indian rupees, about 14.24 million U.S. dollars, to be distributed among the players and support staff in recognition of the tournament victory.
