On 12/02/2010, Arnold Schwarzenegger participated in the Olympic Torch Relay in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the morning of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. He carried the flame through Stanley Park as part of the final day of the 106 day relay, which had traveled across Canada before arriving in Vancouver. The appearance placed Schwarzenegger among a group of international figures selected to carry the torch during the concluding stages of the relay. Schwarzenegger received the flame shortly before 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time and ran approximately 700 meters, a distance reported to be more than double the typical torchbearer segment of about 300 meters. Spectators gathered along the Stanley Park route as he completed his leg of the relay. At the end of his run, he handed the Olympic torch to Sebastian Coe, a two time Olympic gold medalist and then chairman of the London 2012 Organizing Committee. The relay marked the final day of the Vancouver 2010 torch journey, which spanned 106 days and covered communities across Canada before reaching the host city. Schwarzenegger’s participation took place hours before the opening ceremony later that evening, where the Olympic cauldron was lit to officially begin the XXI Olympic Winter Games.
