On 29/03/2018, Arnold Schwarzenegger underwent emergency open heart surgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles following complications during a planned valve replacement procedure. The operation was initially intended to replace a pulmonic valve using a catheter based technique. The valve had originally been implanted in 1997 to treat a congenital heart defect and had reached the end of its expected lifespan.
During the minimally invasive procedure, a complication occurred when the heart wall was accidentally punctured, leading to internal bleeding. An open heart surgical team, already on standby as a precaution for such procedures, immediately intervened and performed emergency surgery. The operation was reported as successful, and Schwarzenegger was stabilized after the unexpected turn of events. The incident drew widespread media attention due to the sudden shift from a routine intervention to a life saving emergency operation.
Following the surgery, Schwarzenegger began a structured recovery process. According to accounts shared afterward, his first words upon waking were “I’m back,” referencing his well known film catchphrase. He started rehabilitation with short walks and gradually increased activity. Within approximately three months, he had recovered sufficiently to begin filming Terminator: Dark Fate, demonstrating a relatively rapid return to work after major heart surgery.
