In April 2004, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger rescued a distressed swimmer while vacationing with his family near the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea in Hawaii. The incident occurred when Schwarzenegger noticed a man struggling in the ocean approximately 100 to 200 yards from shore, clinging to a boogie board and unable to swim back due to severe muscle cramps. According to accounts confirmed by Schwarzenegger’s press secretary, the governor immediately swam out to assist the man. Reaching him in open water, Schwarzenegger towed the swimmer back toward shore while the man held onto the boogie board for support. The rescue took place at a beach area without lifeguards on duty at that time, increasing the urgency of the situation. After bringing the swimmer safely to shore, Schwarzenegger remained with him for about 30 minutes to ensure he had recovered from the cramps and exhaustion. The man was eventually able to leave on his own without requiring further medical assistance. The incident was also recounted by television personality Pat O’Brien, co anchor of Access Hollywood, who was present at the resort during the event. At the time of the rescue, Schwarzenegger had been serving as governor since November 2003 following the California recall election. The Maui incident occurred during a private family vacation and was later reported by media outlets after confirmation from official sources. No injuries or fatalities were reported in connection with the event.
