On 17/06/1988, the buddy cop action film Red Heat, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was released in the United States. Directed by Walter Hill, the film cast Schwarzenegger as Captain Ivan Danko, a disciplined Soviet police officer from Moscow who travels to Chicago to pursue a Georgian drug kingpin. The story begins with Danko capturing the criminal in the Soviet Union, only for the suspect to escape after being transferred to U.S. custody, prompting Danko to cooperate with American authorities. In Chicago, Danko is paired with Detective Art Ridzik, played by James Belushi. The two officers, with contrasting personalities and policing styles, work together to track down the escaped criminal. The cast also included Peter Boyle, Ed O’Ross, and Laurence Fishburne. The film combined action sequences with cross cultural humor, emphasizing the contrast between Danko’s stoic demeanor and Ridzik’s more improvisational approach. Red Heat was one of the first major Hollywood films to feature extensive scenes set in the Soviet Union during the late Cold War period. Production included location filming in Budapest, which doubled for Moscow, along with scenes shot in Chicago. The film grossed over $34 million in North America and contributed to Schwarzenegger’s run of action roles during the late 1980s.
