The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was a high-speed supersonic interceptor developed for the United States Air Force during the Cold War. The aircraft was designed by Lockheed Corporation, with development led by engineer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson and the company’s advanced development group known as Skunk Works. The prototype XF-104 made its first flight on 04/03/1954 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, United States, marking the beginning of testing for one of the fastest fighters of its era. The XF-104 prototype was flown by Lockheed test pilot Tony LeVier during its maiden flight. The aircraft featured a distinctive design with very small, thin wings, a long fuselage, and a T-tail configuration, all optimized for high-speed performance. It was powered by a General Electric J79 turbojet engine, enabling the aircraft to reach speeds exceeding Mach 2 (around 1,320 mph or 2,125 km/h) in later operational versions. The aircraft’s design prioritized speed and climb rate for interception missions. The F-104 entered operational service with the United States Air Force in 1958 as the F-104A Starfighter. It was armed with a 20 mm M61 Vulcan rotary cannon and could carry air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder. The aircraft was designed primarily for high-speed interception but was later adapted for additional roles including ground attack and reconnaissance. Production of the Starfighter continued through the 1960s, with more than 2,500 aircraft built in the United States and under license in several other countries. The aircraft was widely exported and operated by numerous air forces including those of NATO member nations, Canada, Japan, and others. The F-104 remained in service with some air forces into the early 2000s, particularly in Europe, where it played a role in Cold War air defense and strike missions. #F104Starfighter #Lockheed #SupersonicJet #ColdWarAviation #AviationHistory
