The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk was the first operational aircraft designed using stealth technology to reduce radar detection. Developed by Lockheed’s Skunk Works division for the United States Air Force, the aircraft was created as a secret project to test and apply radar-evading design concepts. The prototype Have Blue–based development aircraft, leading to the F-117 design, made the first flight of the operational prototype YF-117A on 18/06/1981 at the secret Area 51 test facility in Nevada, United States.
The aircraft was flown during its first flight by Lockheed test pilot Hal Farley. The F-117 featured a distinctive faceted shape made up of flat surfaces designed to deflect radar waves away from radar receivers. Unlike most fighter aircraft, it relied primarily on stealth characteristics rather than speed or maneuverability to survive in defended airspace. The aircraft was powered by two General Electric F404 turbofan engines and had a maximum speed of approximately Mach 0.92 (about 617 mph or 993 km/h).
The F-117 was designed primarily as a precision ground-attack aircraft capable of penetrating heavily defended airspace to strike high-value targets. It carried weapons internally to maintain its low radar signature and was equipped with laser-guided bombs for precision strikes. Because of the program’s classified nature, the aircraft remained secret for several years.
The F-117 Nighthawk entered operational service in 1983 with the 4450th Tactical Group at Tonopah Test Range Airport in Nevada. The aircraft’s existence was publicly acknowledged by the U.S. government in 1988. The Nighthawk later participated in several military operations, including the 1991 Gulf War, where it conducted precision strike missions against strategic targets. A total of 64 aircraft were built, and the F-117 remained in U.S. Air Force service until its official retirement in 2008.
