In the period when King Matthias Corvinus ascended to the throne of Hungary, the political landscape of Central Europe was undergoing substantial changes. His rise to power involved not only Hungary but also included territories now part of modern-day Slovakia. Born into the Hunyadi family, Matthias was the son of John Hunyadi, a prominent military leader who had gained significant influence through his defense against the Ottoman Empire.
Matthias Corvinus was elected king by the Hungarian nobility. This election followed a period of instability after the death of the previous king, Ladislaus the Posthumous, leading to a power vacuum. Matthias was just fifteen years old when he was chosen by the Diet of Hungary, largely due to the support of the influential Hunyadi faction and his uncle Michael Szilágyi, who played a substantial role in securing his nephew’s accession.
The impact of Matthias Corvinus' rule was notable in several areas. He focused on centralizing authority, curbing the power of the nobility, and reorganizing the administration for greater efficiency. His reign is well-remembered for efforts to reform the judicial system and for his patronage of the arts and culture, resulting in what became known as the Renaissance in Hungary. Matthias’ establishment of the Bibliotheca Corviniana, a vast collection of manuscripts and books, marked a significant intellectual endeavor, making it one of the largest libraries in Europe at the time.
Militarily, Matthias created the Black Army, a formidable and professional standing army designed to protect and expand his domains. He conducted numerous campaigns, extending his influence into neighboring regions, including parts of Austria, Moravia, and Silesia. His efforts were aimed at not only defending against Ottoman incursions but also establishing hegemony within Central Europe.
Throughout his reign, Matthias Corvinus maintained control over the regions now within Slovakia’s borders, integrating them into his broader political and military strategies. The administrative reforms and cultural patronage during his time would leave a lasting legacy in these areas.
