In 2003, after completing his studies at Eton College, Prince Harry spent part of his gap year in the southern African kingdom of Lesotho, an experience that became one of the most influential periods of his early adult life. During his stay, he worked with local communities and visited projects supporting orphaned and vulnerable children affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS.
Prince Harry traveled to Lesotho shortly after finishing school and before beginning formal military training. The trip exposed him to rural conditions and humanitarian challenges very different from life in the United Kingdom. He spent time in remote villages and became closely connected with local people and aid workers involved in community development efforts.
During his time in Lesotho, Prince Harry was reportedly given the Sesotho nickname “Mohale,” a word that translates to “warrior” or “brave one.” The nickname reflected the warm reception he received from local communities and became associated with his long standing relationship with the country.
The experience had a lasting effect on Prince Harry and directly influenced his future humanitarian work. In 2006, together with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, he co founded Sentebale, a charity dedicated to helping children and young people affected by HIV/AIDS, inequality, and poverty in Lesotho and Botswana. The name “Sentebale” means “forget me not” in Sesotho and was chosen in memory of both princes’ mothers.
Prince Harry returned to Lesotho multiple times over the following years to support Sentebale projects, fundraising initiatives, and youth programs. His connection to the country became one of the most enduring charitable relationships of his public life.
The 2003 gap year also included time spent in Australia working on a cattle station before Prince Harry later entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2005 to begin officer training with the British Army.
Why This Moment Matters
Prince Harry’s gap year in Lesotho became a defining experience that shaped his long term commitment to humanitarian work in southern Africa. The relationships and experiences developed during that period ultimately led to the creation of Sentebale, one of the central charitable organizations associated with his public life.
