On 16/05/2014, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, began a two day official visit to Estonia on behalf of the United Kingdom, focusing on military cooperation, remembrance, and NATO partnership ties. The visit was organized to thank Estonia and the Estonian Defence Forces for their service alongside British troops during operations in Afghanistan and to honor Estonian soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict.
The visit began in Tallinn, where Prince Harry attended a public wreath laying ceremony at the Monument to the War of Independence in Freedom Square. Wearing military dress uniform, he paid tribute to fallen Estonian service members during a moment of silence. A handwritten note placed with the wreath read: “In memory of all those who gave their lives for their country.” Hundreds of people gathered in the Estonian capital during the ceremony.
Following the memorial event, Prince Harry attended a reception at the Riigikogu, Estonia’s parliament, where he met government officials, members of parliament, and wounded veterans. Some of the injured Estonian soldiers had previously received treatment alongside British personnel at Headley Court in the United Kingdom. During his remarks, Prince Harry spoke about the close cooperation between British and Estonian troops during deployments in Afghanistan.
On 17/05/2014, Prince Harry traveled to observe the Estonian Defence Forces’ annual “Spring Storm” military exercise. During the visit, he met Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Defence Forces Commander Riho Terras, and military personnel participating in the exercise. Estonia had maintained a military presence in Afghanistan since 2006, with many Estonian troops serving under British command in Helmand Province as part of NATO operations.
The official tour concluded later on 17/05/2014 after a series of engagements centered on remembrance, military partnership, and diplomatic cooperation between Estonia and the United Kingdom within the NATO alliance framework.
Why This Moment Matters
Prince Harry’s visit highlighted the close military relationship between Estonia and the United Kingdom during the Afghanistan mission period. The tour also reflected Estonia’s active participation in NATO operations and publicly recognized the sacrifices made by Estonian service members alongside allied forces.
