The Mrauk-U Kingdom was established in Arakan, a region that had been struggling for autonomy amidst larger neighboring powers. Prior to its founding, Arakan was under the influence of the Laungkyet dynasty, which proved ineffective in maintaining stability. The region frequently became a battleground during conflicts such as the Forty Years' War between the kingdoms of Ava and Pegu. The establishment of the Mrauk-U Kingdom marked a turning point, allowing Arakan to assert its independence and develop into a formidable power in the region.
From its inception, the Mrauk-U Kingdom flourished between the 15th and 17th centuries, extending its influence over East Bengal from 1459 to 1666. It distinguished itself as the only post-Pagan kingdom that successfully resisted annexation by the Taungoo dynasty, which dominated much of the surrounding area. The Mrauk-U Kingdom's rise contributed to the cultural and economic development of Arakan, establishing it as a significant player in regional politics and trade during its peak.
