Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, is a small island nation located in Southeast Asia. It gained independence from Portugal in 1975 but was soon invaded and occupied by Indonesia, leading to a long and brutal struggle for independence. After a referendum in 1999, the majority of Timorese voted for independence, resulting in violence and destruction by pro-Indonesian militias. The country finally achieved full independence in 2002, facing challenges such as widespread poverty and limited infrastructure. Despite these struggles, Timor-Leste has made progress in rebuilding and developing as a young, democratic nation. It continues to work towards stability, economic growth, and social development.
