Pope Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church and the first pope from the Americas, the Southern Hemisphere, and the Jesuit order. Elected in March 2013, he succeeded Pope Benedict XVI after his resignation. Known for his humility, progressive tone, and focus on mercy, poverty, climate action, and social justice, Pope Francis has sought to reform the Vatican and bridge divides within the Church and with other faiths. His papacy marks a shift toward a more inclusive and globally conscious Catholic Church.
