Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Evan Williams, and Noah Glass. The service originated as an internal project at Odeo, a podcasting company based in San Francisco, California. Dorsey sent the first tweet—“just setting up my twttr”—on 21/03/2006 during the platform’s testing phase.
Twitter became publicly available on 15/07/2006. Its design enabled users to follow other accounts and receive real-time updates in a chronological feed. The 140-character limit was originally tied to SMS text messaging constraints, reflecting the platform’s early integration with mobile phones.
The service gained wider visibility in 2007 during the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive festival in Austin, Texas, where live tweets were displayed on large screens, contributing to a surge in usage. By 2010, Twitter had become a widely used platform for news sharing, public commentary, and real-time communication.
In 2013, Twitter became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2022, it was acquired by Elon Musk and subsequently rebranded as X in 2023 under X Corp.
The 15/07/2006 public launch established Twitter as one of the key platforms in the evolution of social media and real-time digital communication.
