Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The company was based in San Francisco, California. Originally developed under the name “Burbn,” the application was refocused on photo sharing before its public release. The app allowed users to take square-format photos, apply digital filters, and share them within the platform or on other social networks. Within 24 hours of launch on the Apple App Store, Instagram reportedly attracted 25,000 users. By December 2010, the service had reached 1 million registered users. The platform’s mobile-first design distinguished it from earlier photo-sharing websites that were primarily web-based. In April 2012, Instagram released an Android version of the app, expanding access beyond iOS users. Later that same month, it was acquired by Facebook (now Meta Platforms) for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. The 06/10/2010 launch marked the introduction of a mobile-centric social media platform focused on visual content sharing, which later expanded to include video, messaging, Stories, and short-form video features. #Instagram #SocialMediaHistory #KevinSystrom #MobileApps #InternetHistory
