Symbolics.com became the first .com domain name ever registered, marking an early milestone in the development of the Domain Name System (DNS) and the commercialization of internet addressing. The domain was registered by Symbolics Inc., a computer manufacturer based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Symbolics specialized in Lisp machines—workstations designed specifically to run the Lisp programming language—and was among several companies formed by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s artificial intelligence community. The registration took place shortly after the implementation of the Domain Name System in 1984. DNS was designed to replace the earlier HOSTS.TXT system, which required a centrally maintained file to map hostnames to numerical IP addresses. With DNS, domain names could be organized hierarchically using top-level domains such as .com (commercial), .edu (education), .gov (government), .mil (military), and .org (organizations). At the time Symbolics.com was registered, the internet was still primarily used by academic, government, and research institutions. In 1985, only a small number of .com domains were created. Throughout the remainder of the 1980s, growth was gradual, with fewer than 100 .com domains registered by the end of the decade. Symbolics.com remains historically documented as the first .com registration, recorded on 15/03/1985. The domain was later acquired by private investors in the 2000s, but its original 1985 registration date remains part of internet infrastructure records. #DotCom #InternetHistory #DNS #Symbolics #TechnologyHistory
