In 1957, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) was established, initially comprising its headquarters, support services, three infantry battalions, and a reconnaissance squadron equipped with armored vehicles. Under the leadership of President Kwame Nkrumah, the GAF was rapidly expanded to align with his vision of a United States of Africa. This expansion included the establishment of the 4th and 5th Battalions in 1961, followed by the formation of the 6th Battalion in 1964, which originated from a parachute airborne unit created in 1963.
Today, the GAF stands as a regional power and a significant military force in West Africa. The professionalism and capabilities of GAF personnel have been recognized internationally, notably by Canadian Forces commander Roméo Dallaire in his book 'Shake Hands with the Devil.' The military operations and doctrine of the GAF are guided by the constitution, Ghana's Law on Armed Forces Military Strategy, and agreements from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre. All military operations are conducted under the authority of the Ministry of Defence, ensuring that the GAF remains a key player in regional stability and peacekeeping efforts.
