Beatrice Patton, born Beatrice Banning Ayer, was the beloved wife of General George S. Patton Jr. They married on May 26, 1910, in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, and together they had three children: Beatrice Smith, Ruth Ellen, and George Patton IV. Beatrice was known for her strong character and support of her husband during his military career. Tragically, on September 30, 1953, Beatrice's life was cut short when she suffered a ruptured aneurysm after falling from her horse during a hunt at the Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. This sudden loss deeply affected General Patton and their family, marking a significant moment in their lives. Beatrice's legacy continues through her children and the memories shared by those who knew her. Her contributions to her family and her husband's career remain a testament to her strength and resilience. Circumstances and Cause of Death: • Location: The incident occurred in Hamilton, Massachusetts, while she was participating in a drag hunt with the Myopia Hunt Club on her brother Frederick Ayer's estate. • The Incident: Witnesses reported that her horse, a young chestnut gelding, began to buck as they approached a fence shortly after 6:30 A.M.. She was thrown from the saddle and died within minutes in the arms of her brother. • Medical Cause: While initially reported as a fall from a horse, the medical examiner determined the underlying cause of death was a ruptured aortic aneurysm (internal hemorrhage), which occurred while she was riding and caused her to fall. Aftermath and Burial: • Final Request: Her well-known wish was to be buried with her husband in the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg. • Interment: Because only fallen soldiers were permitted burial at the military cemetery, her children honored her request by cremating her and scattering a portion of her ashes over the General's grave several years later. • Memorial: The majority of her remains were interred at Green Meadows Farm in Hamilton, Massachusetts, marked by a bronze plaque.
