George Smith Patton Jr. was born on 11/11/1885 in San Gabriel, California. He was the son of George Smith Patton Sr. and Ruth Wilson Patton, and grew up in a family with deep military traditions connected to earlier American conflicts, including the Civil War. His birthplace in San Gabriel, located near Los Angeles, was part of a ranch property where he spent much of his early childhood.
Patton’s early years included private tutoring at home, where he developed a strong interest in military history, classical literature, and cavalry traditions. He later pursued formal military education, attending the Virginia Military Institute in 1903 before transferring to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1904. His birth on 11/11/1885 marked the beginning of a life that would later include Olympic competition, World War I tank command, and senior leadership during World War II.
