On 14/09/1986, the biographical television film The Last Days of Patton premiered on CBS, starring George C. Scott in his return to the role of General George S. Patton. The made-for-television movie served as a follow-up to the 1970 feature film Patton, for which Scott had won the Academy Award for Best Actor. Produced for television audiences, the 1986 film focused on the closing chapter of Patton’s life after World War II, portraying his assignments in occupied Germany and the circumstances leading to his death.
The film depicts Patton’s postwar command of the U.S. Third Army and his controversial public remarks during the Allied occupation. It also follows the period after he was relieved of command and reassigned to the Fifteenth Army, where he worked on compiling historical records of the war. The narrative culminates in the automobile accident in December 1945 near Mannheim, Germany, in which Patton suffered severe spinal injuries. He later died on 21/12/1945 in Heidelberg at the age of 60, events dramatized in the final portion of the broadcast.
