On June 1, 2007, Costa Rica made a significant diplomatic shift by breaking ties with Taiwan and recognizing the People's Republic of China (PRC). This decision marked Costa Rica as the first Central American nation to take such a step. President Óscar Arias Sánchez acknowledged that the move was largely driven by economic necessities, reflecting the growing influence of China in the region. In a gesture of goodwill and investment, the PRC subsequently funded the construction of a $100 million state-of-the-art football stadium located in Parque la Sabana, San José.
The project involved approximately 600 Chinese engineers and laborers, showcasing a collaborative effort between the two nations. The stadium was inaugurated in March 2011, highlighted by a friendly match between the national teams of Costa Rica and China, symbolizing the new diplomatic relationship and economic partnership forged between the two countries.
