In March 2022, The Coca-Cola Company announced the suspension of its business activities in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. The company stated on 08/03/2022 that it would halt operations and sales in the Russian market while continuing to monitor developments related to the war. The decision placed Coca-Cola among a growing list of multinational corporations reducing or ending operations in Russia during the early weeks of the conflict. The suspension affected Coca-Cola’s global beverage portfolio in Russia, including brands such as Coca-Cola, Sprite, and Fanta. Production and distribution changes were implemented through Coca-Cola HBC , the company’s bottling partner in the region, in which The Coca-Cola Company held an ownership stake of roughly 21% at the time. After the suspension announcement, Coca-Cola HBC stopped producing and selling standard Coca-Cola products in Russia and later shifted its local operations toward alternative beverages marketed under regional brands. One of the most visible outcomes of the operational shift was the introduction of “Dobry Cola,” a locally branded soft drink launched after the withdrawal of Coca-Cola’s flagship products from the Russian market. The “Dobry” brand had already existed in Russia as a juice label before being expanded into carbonated beverages. This transition reflected how local bottling operations adapted after the suspension of international trademarks and concentrate supplies connected to Coca-Cola’s global business. The company’s decision came amid increasing international political and consumer pressure on Western corporations operating in Russia after the invasion began in February 2022. Public boycott campaigns emerged across several countries, and U.S. lawmakers publicly urged major consumer brands to suspend Russian operations. Companies including McDonald's , Starbucks , and other multinational firms announced similar exits or suspensions during the same period. The suspension marked a major change for Coca-Cola’s presence in Russia, where the company and its bottling network had operated for decades following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The withdrawal also demonstrated the broader economic response by multinational corporations during the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine war, as global brands reassessed operations, supply chains, and reputational risks tied to the conflict. Why This Moment Matters Coca-Cola’s suspension in Russia illustrated how geopolitical events increasingly influenced corporate operations and brand strategy in global markets. The move showed how public pressure, government scrutiny, and international sanctions could rapidly reshape the presence of long-established multinational companies in a major economy.
