In 1888, Atlanta pharmacist and businessman Asa Griggs Candler began purchasing ownership interests and formula rights connected to Coca-Cola
from the beverage’s inventor, Dr. John Stith Pemberton. The transactions took place during a period of financial uncertainty and declining health for Pemberton, who had created Coca-Cola in 1886 as a soda fountain drink sold in Atlanta, Georgia.
Although Candler had started acquiring portions of the business in late 1887, the process unfolded gradually over several years. Historical records indicate that Candler spent a combined total of approximately $2,300 to secure rights associated with the Coca-Cola name, formula, and production interests from Pemberton and other stakeholders connected to the business. Because multiple ownership agreements existed at the time, Candler needed to negotiate with several parties before consolidating control.
Dr. Pemberton’s deteriorating health and financial pressures contributed to the fragmented ownership situation surrounding Coca-Cola during the late 1880s. Various investors, associates, and business partners held partial claims to the formula or distribution rights. After Pemberton’s death on 16/08/1888, the complexity of these overlapping agreements continued for several years before Candler eventually secured sole ownership in 1891.
Once Candler gained full control, he focused heavily on marketing, distribution, and brand development. He founded The Coca-Cola Company
in 1892 and expanded the product through aggressive advertising campaigns, coupon promotions, painted signage, and pharmacy partnerships across the United States. Under Candler’s leadership, Coca-Cola evolved from a regional soda fountain drink into a nationally recognized consumer product during the 1890s and early twentieth century.
Candler’s business approach emphasized trademark protection and consistent branding at a time when many competing soft drinks existed in the American market. His investments in advertising and distribution systems became central to Coca-Cola’s long-term commercial success and established the foundation for the company’s future global expansion.
