On 08/05/1886, the first glass of Coca-Cola was sold at Jacobs’ Pharmacy in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The beverage was created by pharmacist Dr. John Stith Pemberton, who developed the formula as a flavored syrup that was mixed with carbonated water and served at the pharmacy’s soda fountain. The drink was originally sold for five cents per glass. Dr. Pemberton, a pharmacist and former Confederate Army officer, developed Coca-Cola during a period when patent medicines and tonic beverages were widely popular in the United States. The original formula contained extracts from coca leaves and kola nuts, ingredients commonly associated at the time with stimulation and medicinal benefits. Coca-Cola was initially marketed as a refreshing tonic that could help relieve fatigue, headaches, and nervousness. The name “Coca-Cola” was suggested by Pemberton’s bookkeeper and business partner Frank M. Robinson, who also created the beverage’s distinctive flowing script logo that remains recognizable worldwide. Early advertisements promoted Coca-Cola as both refreshing and invigorating, reflecting the marketing style commonly used for pharmacy fountain drinks in the late nineteenth century. During its first year, Coca-Cola sales were modest, averaging only a small number of servings per day in Atlanta. However, the beverage gradually gained popularity as soda fountain culture expanded across the United States. In 1892, businessman Asa G. Candler acquired significant rights to the Coca-Cola formula and helped transform the product into a national commercial brand through extensive advertising and distribution efforts. The first serving of Coca-Cola at Jacobs’ Pharmacy became one of the foundational moments in the history of the modern beverage industry. What began as a locally sold pharmacy drink in Atlanta eventually developed into one of the world’s most widely recognized consumer products, distributed across more than 200 countries and territories. Historical Significance The sale of the first glass of Coca-Cola marked the beginning of a brand that would become deeply connected to global advertising, mass consumer culture, and the international beverage industry. The origins of Coca-Cola at a neighborhood pharmacy also reflected how many early soft drinks evolved from medicinal tonics into mainstream commercial refreshments.
