In March 2025, former central banker Mark Carney was elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party in a landslide victory, winning about 86 % of party votes and replacing outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following his resignation amid political turmoil. Carney’s victory in the Liberal leadership election on 9 March 2025 made him the 14th permanent leader of the party and effectively the next prime minister of Canada.
Carney, previously governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, entered politics for the first time in 2025 and quickly became a front-runner due to his strong economic credentials and reputation as a crisis manager. He assumed leadership of the Liberals and was sworn in as prime minister on 14 March 2025. At that time, he did not hold a seat in the House of Commons, an unusual but constitutionally permitted situation in Canadian politics
