On 29/06/1984, the fantasy adventure film Conan the Destroyer was released theatrically in the United States by Universal Pictures. The film served as the sequel to Conan the Barbarian (1982) and featured Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his role as the sword wielding warrior Conan. Directed by Richard Fleischer, the movie continued the character’s journey in a more adventure oriented storyline involving a royal quest and mythical challenges.
In the film, Conan is recruited by Queen Taramis, played by Sarah Douglas, to escort Princess Jehnna, portrayed by Olivia d’Abo, on a mission to retrieve a magical horn. Conan is joined by a group of companions including Malak, played by Tracey Walter, the warrior woman Zula, portrayed by Grace Jones, and the wizard Akiro, played by Mako. Basketball player Wilt Chamberlain appeared as the warrior Bombaata. The narrative follows the group as they confront supernatural enemies, including monsters, guards, and magical forces tied to the quest.
The release followed Schwarzenegger’s breakout performance in Conan the Barbarian, which helped establish him as a leading action and fantasy film star. Conan the Destroyer emphasized broader adventure elements and larger ensemble action sequences. The film grossed more than $31 million domestically and expanded the Conan character’s presence in popular culture during the mid 1980s.
