On 14/09/1991, professional bodybuilder Lee Haney won his eighth consecutive Mr. Olympia title, surpassing Arnold Schwarzenegger’s longstanding record of seven victories. The 1991 Mr. Olympia contest took place at the Orlando Arena in Orlando, Florida, and brought together leading competitors in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB). Haney’s win extended his undefeated run at the Mr. Olympia competition, which began with his first title in 1984.
Arnold Schwarzenegger had previously held the record with seven Mr. Olympia titles earned between 1970 and 1975, and again in 1980. His achievements had stood as the benchmark in professional bodybuilding for more than a decade. Haney’s eighth victory in 1991 established a new record for most Mr. Olympia wins at the time. During the competition, Haney finished ahead of runner up Dorian Yates, with other top competitors including Vince Taylor and Shawn Ray.
The 1991 contest marked Haney’s final Mr. Olympia appearance, as he announced his retirement from competition afterward. His eight consecutive titles from 1984 through 1991 set a new standard in the sport and remained the record until later matched by Ronnie Coleman and Lee Haney’s total later tied by other competitors. The outcome on 14/09/1991 formally ended Schwarzenegger’s position as the record holder for most Mr. Olympia victories.
