On 30/07/1947, Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born in the village of Thal, near Graz, in the state of Styria, Austria. He was the second son of Gustav Schwarzenegger, a local police chief, and Aurelia Schwarzenegger. The family lived in modest conditions in post World War II Austria, during a period marked by economic hardship and limited opportunities in rural areas. Schwarzenegger spent his childhood in Thal and later attended school in nearby Graz.
His upbringing was described as strict, with his father enforcing discipline and structured routines. Schwarzenegger later recounted that expectations around athletics, responsibility, and work were emphasized in the household. As a teenager, he became interested in bodybuilding after exposure to weight training and magazines featuring physique champions. This interest developed into a daily training routine, which he pursued alongside school and part time work.
By his mid teens, Schwarzenegger had set goals to become a bodybuilding champion and move to the United States. He began competing in local contests in Austria and neighboring countries, gradually building recognition within European bodybuilding circles. His early life in Thal provided the background for his later move into competitive bodybuilding, international travel, and eventual relocation to the United States in 1968.
