On 20/06/2017, Arnold Schwarzenegger launched the inaugural Austrian World Summit in Vienna, establishing an annual international climate conference focused on advancing practical solutions aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The summit was co founded with Austrian climate advocate Monika Langthaler and held under the patronage of Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen. The event formed part of the broader Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative, designed to connect policymakers, businesses, and civil society groups around climate action. The first summit adopted the motto “From Sustainable Goals to Real Action,” emphasizing implementation rather than policy debate. More than 700 participants from over 50 countries attended the inaugural conference. Among the speakers were Patricia Espinosa, then Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern. Sessions focused on renewable energy, urban sustainability, climate finance, and cross sector partnerships aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Austrian World Summit was structured as an annual platform in Vienna to encourage collaboration between government leaders, scientists, companies, and non governmental organizations. Schwarzenegger positioned the event as a venue for sharing measurable strategies and commitments tied to global climate targets. The 2017 launch established the foundation for subsequent yearly gatherings under the same initiative.
