On 03/10/1970, Arnold Schwarzenegger won his first Mr. Olympia title in New York City, defeating three time reigning champion Sergio Oliva. The competition, organized by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness, marked Schwarzenegger’s first victory at the sport’s most prestigious professional bodybuilding event. At 23 years old, he became the youngest Mr. Olympia winner at the time.
Just weeks earlier, on 19/09/1970, Schwarzenegger had competed in London and won the NABBA Mr. Universe title. After that victory, he traveled to New York City to compete in the Mr. Olympia contest. Facing Sergio Oliva, who had dominated the competition from 1967 through 1969, Schwarzenegger presented improved size, symmetry, and posing, which earned him the judges’ decision and ended Oliva’s championship run.
The 1970 win marked the beginning of Schwarzenegger’s dominance in professional bodybuilding. He would go on to win additional Mr. Olympia titles in 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1975, establishing a multi year streak. The 03/10/1970 victory in New York City is widely recognized as the moment he first secured the sport’s top title and launched a period of sustained success.
