The first British raid of the war involved a strategic bombing operation conducted by the Royal Air Force. A total of 15 Blenheim bombers were deployed to target the German fleet located in the Heligoland Bight. The primary objectives of this mission were the German pocket-battleship Admiral Scheer and the light cruiser Emden, both of which were anchored off Wilhelmshaven. This operation marked a significant escalation in aerial warfare tactics, as it was one of the initial attempts by British forces to engage German naval assets from the air. During the raid, seven aircraft were lost, highlighting the risks involved in such operations. Despite the challenges faced, the attack managed to hit the Admiral Scheer three times; however, all bombs failed to detonate, rendering the strikes ineffective in terms of causing damage to the targeted vessels.
