As tensions of World War I continued to escalate, an important shift occurred when Germany declared war on Portugal. This event was triggered by Portugal's decision to seize German ships docked in its ports. Until this point, Portugal had maintained a careful stance, seeking to stay neutral despite pressures from various fronts. However, German provocative actions and Portugal's alliance with Britain led to the seizure of 36 German and Austro-Hungarian ships, prompting a severe reaction from Germany.
The declaration expanded the scope of the conflict in Europe and marked Portugal's full entry into the war on the side of the Allies. This move was significant for the Allies as it opened a new front, stretching German resources even thinner and contributing to the strategic positioning in the war. Portugal, in return, hoped to secure its overseas territories and affirm its colonial standing by siding with the Allies.
The decision was partly influenced by Portugal’s colonial interests in Africa, particularly in Angola and Mozambique, which faced threats from German colonial forces. The conflict further emphasized the global nature of World War I, involving nations and territories far from the main European theatres of war.
With Portugal now actively participating, the Allied forces benefitted from additional naval and military support. Troops from Portugal, including the Corpo Expedicionário Português (Portuguese Expeditionary Corps), were sent to the Western Front, and Portuguese naval assets began safeguarding key maritime routes. This involvement, however, came at a significant cost to Portugal, both in terms of military casualties and economic tolls.
This moment underscored the interconnected web of alliances and how colonial possessions and neutral nations were inevitably drawn into the vortex of World War I. For Portugal, it marked a substantial shift from neutrality to active engagement, influenced by geopolitical strategies and historic alliances.
