On 09/06/1763, Leopold Mozart, his wife Anna Maria, and their children Maria Anna “Nannerl” Mozart and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart departed Salzburg to begin an extended tour across Europe. Nannerl was 11 years old and Wolfgang was seven. Leopold organized the journey to present their musical abilities to aristocratic courts and public audiences. The trip began with travel through southern Germany, including stops in Munich and Augsburg, before continuing toward major cultural centers. Over the following years, the family visited cities such as Mannheim, Frankfurt, Brussels, Paris, London, and The Hague. During these visits, the children performed on keyboard instruments, demonstrated improvisation, and played chamber music. Leopold arranged concerts and private appearances for nobility, including royal courts. While traveling, Wolfgang also began composing early keyboard pieces, sonatas, and symphonies. The tour exposed him to different musical styles and leading musicians across Europe. The journey that began on 9 June 1763 lasted more than three years, concluding with the family’s return to Salzburg in late 1766. The extended travel established Wolfgang and Nannerl as widely recognized child performers and introduced the young composer to major European musical traditions. Why This Moment Matters The departure on 09/06/1763 began the Mozart family’s multi year Grand Tour, during which Wolfgang first performed across Europe and encountered diverse musical styles.
