In 1764, during the Mozart family’s extended stay in London, eight year old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart met Johann Christian Bach, often known as the “London Bach.” The encounter took place during the Mozarts’ 15 month residency in the city from April 1764 to August 1765. Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, was then a prominent composer in London and served as music master to Queen Charlotte. The meeting introduced Mozart to a leading figure in the city’s musical life at a formative stage of his development. Contemporary accounts describe that Mozart and Bach performed together at the keyboard, sometimes sharing the instrument. Reports from the period recount that Bach placed the young Mozart in front of him and they alternated phrases in improvised musical dialogue. Observers noted that the exchange sounded continuous, as if played by a single performer. During the London stay, Mozart also studied Bach’s compositions and absorbed stylistic features associated with the galant style, including clear phrasing, balanced structures, and lyrical melody. Mozart later arranged several keyboard sonatas by Johann Christian Bach, adapting them for ensemble performance. The interaction in 1764 occurred while Mozart was composing some of his earliest symphonies in London. These works reflect influences associated with Johann Christian Bach’s orchestral writing, including light textures and clear thematic contrast. The London residency continued until August 1765, when the Mozart family departed for continental Europe. The meeting between Mozart and Johann Christian Bach therefore took place during a period of study, performance, and stylistic development in the English capital. Why This Moment Matters The 1764 encounter exposed Mozart to Johann Christian Bach’s galant style, which appears in Mozart’s early London symphonies and keyboard works.
